How secure is your data going to the cloud?

According to the Channel Futures MSP 501 2019 Cloud Report, security was undeniably referred to as one of the most substantial cloud trends, with service providers considering security as both a significant opportunity as well as a challenge. As modern organizations move to the cloud, security without a doubt has become one of the most pressing concerns and issues they face. MSPs are seeking new technologies and emerging trends to stay secure and satisfy customers.

How secure is your data going to the cloud? Are you a little worried? You should be because there is a cause for concern. Organizations are continually moving data to cost-effective storage options in the cloud. According to a survey by AllCloud, 2020 Cloud Infrastructure Report,

• 85% of organizations expect to have the majority of their workloads on the cloud by 2020.
• More than 23% of organizations surveyed plan to be cloud-only in 2020.

As companies move to the cloud, so does their sensitive information. How secure is that information? In a study from McAfee, “Enterprise Supernova: The Data Dispersion Cloud Adoption and Risk Report”, 1,000 enterprises across 11 countries were polled. In addition, anonymous data from 30 million enterprise cloud users were cited. According to the report,  there is a new era of data protection on the horizon:

• Only 31% of companies have consistent data protection across their devices, networks, and cloud services.

And as intercloud travel opens new paths to risk:

•  Nearly one in 10 files shared in the cloud with sensitive data use a link open to the public, an increase of 111% year over year.

More Sensitive Data in the Cloud, 91% Do not Encrypt Data at Rest

The McAfee report sited that more than a quarter (26%) of the files analyzed in the cloud now contain sensitive data, with a substantial increase of 23% year over year. However, security for this data does not meet the market growth. Of the cloud services analyzed, 91% do not encrypt data at rest, while one in five respondents said they lacked visibility into what data resides in their cloud applications.
